ISO announced the recently approved specification for electric bicycles. Nowadays, electric bicycles are considered the ideal means of transportation. Undoubtedly, they are considered to be one of the best pollution control solutions. The industry is ramping up production at a breakneck pace to meet demand, posting strong growth prior to the COVID-19 pandemic. With the period of isolation, the demand has only increased. People don't just want to avoid public transportation, they just want to get around in the fresh air.

Recognizing the needs of the industry, ISO has published a new technical specification assigned for the safety of electric bicycles to help the technology move in the right direction. New specification ISO / TS 4210-10, which is the tenth part of the ISO / TS 4210 series Cycles - Requirements for bicycle safety. Safety requirements for electrically power assisted cycles (EPAC), which brings together regulations from different countries to provide internationally harmonized safety requirements.

Shinji Yoshimura, Convenor of the ISO working group who developed this document, noted that global concern about the environmental impact of cars has been the driving force behind the industry for some time, and technology is rapidly evolving in response. By pooling international expertise to provide a standard set of requirements, the industry can move even further, prioritizing user safety.

ISO / TS 4210-10 is the latest in a series of ten ISO standards for bicycles, and the remaining nine in this series are currently in the process of being updated. These include, inter alia, ISO 4210-2 Cycles - Safety requirements for bicycles - Part 2: Requirements for city and trekking, young adult, mountain and racing bicycles, and ISO 4210-3 Cycles - Safety requirements for bicycles - Part 3 : General test methods.
